Developing a Language for Spatial Awareness - Aesthetics of Quietude

In collaboration with performance artist Will Dickie. (2009)

A series of photographs born from a collaboration between performance artist Will Dickie and myself, ‘The Aesthetics of Quietude’ explores the margins between movement and stillness. By capturing a sequence of precise movements of apparent and alluring simplicity, it explores the ambiguity of stability. My interest lies in articulating the body between action and repose, inhabiting a threshold where movement is intimated yet withheld. Through this tension, the photographs invite a focus on the relationship between figure and spatial environment, gesture and void. In this state of stillness, the familiar coordinates of movement, duration, and certainty are destabilised, opening a contemplative space in which perception itself becomes the object of inquiry.
